ADHD and Related Disorders
(Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Executive Functioning Difficulties)

What it is:

ADHD is a condition that affects a person’s ability to pay attention, control impulses, and manage energy levels. It often starts in childhood but can continue into adulthood. Related disorders may include executive functioning difficulties, which affect planning, organization, time management, and selfcontrol. People with ADHD are not “lazy” or “disobedient”; their brains process information differently, making daily tasks challenging.

Families or clients may notice:

  • Trouble staying focused on tasks, reading, or listening carefully
  • Easily distracted by surroundings or internal thoughts
  • Difficulty completing tasks or following instructions
  • Impulsivity — acting without thinking, interrupting, or taking risks
  • Restlessness, fidgeting, or difficulty sitting still
  • Forgetfulness — losing things, missing appointments, or forgetting responsibilities
  • Emotional outbursts or frustration over small problems
  • In adults: difficulty organizing work, managing time, or maintaining relationships

Common Related Disorders:

  • Inattentive Type ADHD: Mainly difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, and distractibility
  • Hyperactive-Impulsive Type ADHD: Mainly restlessness, impulsive actions, and difficulty staying still
  • Combined Type ADHD: Symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity/impulsivity
  • Executive Functioning Difficulties: Trouble planning, organizing, prioritizing, or regulating emotions

Why it happens:

ADHD and related disorders can result from genetics, differences in brain structure and neurotransmitters, early childhood experiences, or environmental factors. It is not caused by poor parenting or laziness.

Bio-Psycho-Social Approach to Recovery:

  • Biological (Body): Medication to improve attention, reduce impulsivity, and manage restlessness (if needed), plus sleep and nutrition support
  • Psychological (Mind): Therapy to develop focus, organizational skills, time management, coping strategies, and emotional regulation
  • Social (Life & Relationships): Family education, supportive routines, structured schedules, and strategies to manage work, school, or social challenges

At Miracle Rehabilitation Centre, individuals with ADHD and related disorders are helped to improve focus, manage impulses, structure daily life, regulate emotions, and strengthen relationships, while families learn how to support without frustration or blame.
